“Christopher Nolan's next film will be a mythological and epic action epic based on Homer's Odyssey and shot across the globe with brand new Imax technology.” This was announced on the official social media profiles by Universal Pictures, the production company with which the 2024 Oscar-winning director (for best film with Oppenheimer) is working, who also adds that the film which brings the Homer saga for the first time “to the Imax screens will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.”
Variety also adds that the production, led by Nolan himself with his wife Emma Thomas, should begin as early as the first half of 2025. The cast is also stellar with currently the confirmations of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong' or, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Holland told The Dish last week that he signed but “to be perfectly honest, I don't really know what it's about” and in October on Good Morning America that it “reminded him of the call for Spider-Man 10 years ago. It's an incredible thing for me.”
The Odyssey has already been the protagonist of various films and TV series starting from the 1911 silent film directed by Giuseppe De Liguoro, Francesco Bertolini and Adolfo Padovan and made on the occasion of the Turin International Exhibition and the fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of Italy . In 1954 Ulisse arrived with Kirk Douglas directed by Mario Camerini. In Ulysses against Hercules from 1962 by Mario Caiano with Georges Marchal there was also Raffaella Carrà as Adraste. In 1989 there was Nostos – The Return written and directed by Franco Piavoli. From 2000 is Brother, Where Art Thou? (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) directed by the Coen brothers and loosely based on The Odyssey with George Clooney and John Turturro. Ithaca – The Return by Uberto Pasolini will arrive in theaters in January, which tells of the return of Odyssey (Ralph Fiennes) to his wife Penelope (Juliette Binoche).
The 1968 drama Odissea based on the Homeric poem, directed by Franco Rossi, Piero Schivazappa and Mario Bava, can be seen on RaiPlay. This is Rai's first color production and, at the same time, one of the most successful dramas. The cast includes Bekim Fehmiu, Irene Papas, Renaud Verley, Roy Purcell.
