The new film by
Christopher Nolan for Universal it will be The
Odysseyan adaptation of the epic poem composed by Homer around the 8th century BC. This was revealed by the Studio.
“The next film by
Christopher NolanThe Odyssey, is a mythological action epic filmed around the world using brand-new IMAX film technology,” the studio announced in a message published on X. “The film brings Homer's seminal saga to IMAX theater screens for the first time and will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.”

Homer's ancient epic poem tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and the struggle against divine will. The story includes iconic episodes such as the meeting with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe, adventures that culminate with his reunion with his wife Penelope.
Although this would be the most high-budget adaptation of this text to date, the poem was previously adapted into the 1954 film Ulyssesdirected by Mario Camerini and played by
Kirk Douglasas well as in the 1997 miniseries
The Odysseydirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and played by Armand Assante. The last Odyssey books were also the main source for The Return, by Uberto Pasolini, which will be released in Italy at the beginning of 2025 and which stars Ralph Fiennes as Ulysses and Juliette Binoche as Penelope.
