Albania, Rama announces the blocking of TikTok for one year
TIRANA (ALBANIA) (ITALPRESS) – Albania will block access to TikTok for a year. This was announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama during a meeting with representatives of parents and teachers. According to the ATA agency, the head of the Albanian government has clarified that access to the social media platform will be blocked for everyone and that the decision comes after consulting experts on education and child safety. The decision arises from concerns about the safety of minors online, mainly linked to cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content. The topic had been in the limelight for weeks after a 14-year-old in Tirana was stabbed to death by one of his peers, a few steps from a school, following an argument that started on social media.
“TikTok will not be available in the Republic of Albania,” Rama announced, adding that the government will also follow the actions planned by other countries regarding this platform. The prime minister reported that TikTok will be blocked in 2025 and that the technical time to initiate this ban requires six to eight weeks.
“During this year we will find out how other countries and TikTok itself will behave. The company is based in China, but this country prohibits harmful content, including debauchery, perversion, violence, bullying and crime,” Rama said, explaining that the government will continue to monitor the situation and will also look for other ways to improve the safety of minors online.
