Baroni celebrates, Giampaolo complains

A goal from Marusic in the final minutes gave Lazio a 2-1 victory on the field of a Lecce team who played with numerical inferiority for the entire second half after Castellanos had given the Biancocelesti the lead.

Lazio beats Lecce 2-1 at Via del Mare in the first matchday 17 of the 2024-2025 Serie A and momentarily rises to third place in the standings. What gave Baroni success was a goal from substitute Marusic a few minutes before the final whistle which resolved a match that had become quite complicated for the Romans despite a second half played with numerical superiority.

A victory that came at the end of a match which, at the end of a balanced first half, the Biancocelesti had steered the match towards their side with Guilbert's expulsion (who saved 'Taty' Castellanos's shot with his arm) and the resulting penalty converted by the Argentine striker himself which sent Baroni's men leading by one goal and one man at half-time.

At the start of the second half, however, Giampaolo, without making any substitutions, redesigned his Lecce team despite the numerical inferiority he immediately found the equalizer with Tete Morente's excellent long-range shot which left Provedel no chance. At that point Lazio, driven by the new arrivals Pedro and Tchaouna, tries to increase the offensive pressure to regain the lead, also creating some potentially dangerous opportunities (to highlight the providential sliding save by Berisha on a Zaccagni thrown towards the net) but leaving it open alongside the home team's counterattacks revitalized by the entry onto the pitch of the lively Rebic and Pierret.

The Biancocelesti pay for too much frenzy but in the end, a few minutes from the final whistle, they manage to find the goal that gives the three points thanks to the turn of the newly introduced Marusic which surprises Falcone thus giving Baroni what now seemed like an unexpected result. In fact, nothing changes in the very excited minutes of injury time in which everything happens (from the stone thrown at Guendouzi and the half-brawl that broke out between the benches to the crossbar hit by Kaba which could have been worth the sensational 2-2 to the Salento team). Three very important points for Lazio, who have obtained a result that allows them to put the resounding home defeat against Inter last Monday behind them and temporarily catch up with the Nerazzurri in third place in the table.
