The billionaire Elon Musk he wrote in X that «only AfD can save Germany». With this comment, Musk relaunched a post by the far-right activist and influencer, Naomi Seibt, in which she denounces that «the alleged next German chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is horrified by the idea that Germany could follow the example of Elon Musk and Javier Milei” and “rejects any discussion with AfD”.
Germany will hold early federal elections next year following the fall of the Scholz government, which was defeated by the Bundestag on 16 December.
The AfD candidate for chancellorship, Alice Weidelin turn commented on Musk’s post stating that the billionaire is “absolutely right”.
This is what AFD is
The AfD is a Eurosceptic and anti-immigration party, partially classified as extremist by the German authorities, which according to polls could come in second place in the early elections next February. According to the Politbarometer poll published by the public broadcaster ZDF, the conservative bloc led by Merz drops by two points to 31%, while the AfD follows at a certain distance with 19%; Scholz’s Social Democrats remain at 16%. However, the possibility of the AfD being part of the next government is not contemplated as the other parties maintain an agreement, known as the cordon sanitaire, not to collaborate with the far-right party.
When Musk called Scholz a “jester”
It is not the first time that Musk has meddled in German politics: last November he used X to describe Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a “jester”, to which the German government reacted with sarcasm.
