Kraven – The Hunterthe most recent Spider-Man spin-off produced by Sony Pictures, achieved in its first weekend one of the worst box office results ever for a film based on a Marvel comic.
In the first days of its release, the film directed by JC Chandor has in fact grossed 11 million dollars in the United States (ranking behind Oceania 2 e Wicked) and only 15 million in the other 60 countries where it has already been released, for a total of 26 million.
The flop of the film is evident above all when comparing these figures to those spent on its making, which amounted to 110 million dollars. In this way, Kraven – The Hunter exceeded – negatively – the result of Madame Webwhich last February collected 49 million in its first weekend (including 15 in the United States).
The box office failure of Kraven – The Hunter was accompanied by numerous negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes – a review aggregator site – the film currently has a score of 15%, out of a total of 115 recorded reviews. On Metacritichowever, the film is currently at 35 out of 100 (out of 40 reviews).
Directed by JC Chandor (Triple Frontier, 1981: Indagine a New York), Kraven – The Hunter stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Huntsman), Russell Crowe (Kraven’s father), Ariana DeBose (Calypso), Christopher Abbott (The Foreigner), Alessandro Nivola (Rhino) and Fred Hechinger (Dmitri Smerdyakov/ Chameleon).
In the comics, Kraven the Hunter – aka Sergei Kravinoff – is a big game hunting enthusiast of Russian origin, with a family with a rather tragic history. Thanks to the use of some particular herbs, he is also endowed with superhuman strength and agility.
