President-elect Donald Trump said Monday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy should be ready to strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end Ukraine’s nearly three-year-old war.

“We have to make a deal,” Mr. Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Mr. Trump said he would speak with Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelenskiy about ending the war in Ukraine, saying he was troubled by images of carnage from the conflict.

“This has got to stop,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump did not directly answer a question about whether he believed Ukraine should cede territory to Russia as part of a negotiated deal to end the war.

Mr. Trump said much of the disputed territory had been reduced to rubble and would take a century to recover.

“I mean there are towns where there’s not a single building standing, it’s a demolition site,” he said.

He also said he was shown images of battlefields littered with corpses that reminded him of some grisly photographs from the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

Mr. Trump has said he wants to end the war quickly, but he has remained cautious about details. He told Time magazine in an interview published last week that he had a “very good plan” to help, but if he reveals it now, “it almost becomes a worthless plan.”
