log which ends the meal. A dessert in high demand both in stores and in bakeries and pastries, and on which the profession relies heavily. It must be said that this is a crucial period, which plays a significant role in the turnover of the year.
This year however, for Christmas 2024, there is a chance that orders will be fewer, or at least less generous. The reason? The log is one of those products whose prix will weigh in the French basket. And since inflation has spared no one recently, and end-of-year financial aid could take a little longer to be paid, many consumers
could be cooled.
Why will the price of the log be higher for Christmas 2024?
Why ordering a log from the pastry chef or buying it in the supermarket will come back to you
more expensive than last year? The reason is quite simple: unlike foie gras, whose sector is doing better this year, production costs exploded. Butter, an essential ingredient for its production, has become much more expensive. An increase in prices which can be explained by “Bluetongue (BCF) in Europe, a viral disease that is spreading on cattle farms in Europe”.
An illness, above all, which raises fears of “fall in milk collection” as reported by BFMTV. Another problem that affects the price of your log? There
rise in the price of cocoaWho “has hardly stopped climbing since the summer of 2023” and which at the same time increased the price of chocolate. The latter being one of the favorite ingredients on the frozen log, professionals have no other choice but to pass on its increase in the final price.

Christmas 2024: what increase in the price of the log?
An increase that Laurent Le Daniel, president of the National Confederation of Pastry Artisans (CNAP), nevertheless wishes to minimize, who assures our colleagues that it
“will remain reasonable”. But is this really the case?
By how much the log should increase compared to Christmas 2023? According to a study carried out by France Bleu, in partnership with NielsenIQ, it is a increase of 12% which should be reflected on your log this year.
For this dessert, if purchased from a brand and for six people, it will cost you 12,02 euros, either
“1.25 euros more than last year.” And if you swear by chocolate for this traditional pastry, you’ll have to put a little more money into your wallet. “Depending on the type of log you buy, prices may vary. If you take the chocolate log, you will be more like 13.45 euros”specifies from France Bleu Emmanuel Cannes, inflation and prices expert at NielsenIQ.
These products that will not increase this year for your end-of-year meal
Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. In its article, the media notes that the price of several
timeless products have decreased compared to other years. The three-kilo non-farm turkey, for example, “saw its price drop by 25% between 2023 and 2024.”

The same goes for foie gras, smoked salmon (which records “ on average, one drop of 6% compared to 2023”), or the 300 g scallops and the distributor brand.
