The assassination, in early December, of Brian Thompson, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurance company in the United States, reignited an explosive debate: that of medical care in a system that is on its last legs, dominated by private groups that are expensive for patients.
The case has reignited Americans' resentment toward health insurance companies. On December 4, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, 54, collapsed under the bullets of his assassin. On the shell casings found at the crime scene, three words were engraved: “delay, deny, deposit”, a slogan associated with the practices of health insurers.
The suspect arrested the following week, Luigi Mangione, 26, a graduate of a prestigious university and from a wealthy family, had nothing of the typical profile of a killer. This young man suffering from serious back problems would have been pushed to the limit by a system that had abandoned him. In a manifesto found by investigators, Luigi Mangione denounces the health system “the most expensive in the world, while the life expectancy of an American is ranked 42e world rank,” Joseph Kenny, of the New York police, told ABC.
“Americans must choose between taking care of themselves or preserving their savings to send their children to university,” summarizes Anne Sénéquier.
“Any reform seems impossible”
