“My duty as mayor is to ensure that the site is secure. This is why I am issuing this order, knowing that there are 8m holes on this land belonging to the businessman Alain Thirion, whose I am waiting for news, to discuss the future of this completely abandoned industrial wasteland and which must at least be decontaminated” the mayor of Charmes Raphaël Michelet told us on the phone this Monday morning, the day after the violent fire which destroyed part of the buildings of the former Roger-Perrin spinning mill (see press release from the prefecture on the circumstances below). For the chief magistrate, there is little doubt that the accidental theory is excluded, human intervention is probably at the origin of the disaster on this site where many flammable materials remain.
Press release from the prefecture:
This Sunday, December 15, 2024, around 5:30 p.m., a fire broke out in the former Charmes spinning mill, with a total surface area of approximately 12,000 m², and which is located on rue des divisions nationaux, at the exit of Charms direction Nancy.
The fire, which spread over an area of 3,600 m², caused a significant risk of collapse of the building as well as an industrial chimney.
As a safety measure, the D157 road was temporarily closed to traffic and the residents of rue des Bretonnes were confined to their homes.
A total of 73 firefighters were mobilized to control the fire and ensure the safety of the scene. Madam Chief of Staff of the Prefecture, the Mayor of Charmes as well as the police were on site during the intervention.
The fire was extinguished and the diversion that had been put in place for traffic was lifted shortly before 3:00 a.m. All state services remain mobilized.
Madame la Préfète des Vosges thanks all the staff involved for their responsiveness and professionalism, and recalls the importance of respecting safety instructions.
