The Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of New Caledonia (Isee) published, Monday December 16, a study on the price index in the territory for the month of November 2024. If prices fell by 0, 7% in November, over a year prices increase by almost 1%. Here are three key figures to remember.
Like every month, the Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of New Caledonia worked on the price index in New Caledonia
A 0.7% drop in prices in November
Food prices have fallen. In detail, Isee notes that dairy products decreased by 2.6%, vegetables mainly tomatoes, cucumbers and onions decreased by 2.4%. Fruits experienced an increase of -2.1% due to the prices of bananas and pineapples. On the contrarythe price of fish increases by 0.7% as well as oils and fats (+0.8%). However, these figures should be qualified: over one year, food prices increased by 5%.
Decrease in energy prices by 2.6%
After two months of increases in September (+0.7%) and October (+2.7%), the cost of energy for consumers is starting to fall again. This development is due to variations in fuel prices. Gasoline is at 157.2 F/L in November which represents a decrease of 5.2%, 137.2 F/L for diesel, the drop is 5.1%. However, the prices of electricity and gas are not changing.
Low-income families still affected
Since September 2022, Isee has been measuring inflation in parallel for 20% of the lowest-income New Caledonian households. Reduced to their consumption habits, the drop in November amounts to only 0.4% and the increase over one year climbs to 2.4% while other New Caledonian households only feel an increase of 0.9%.
