Victorious on the night of December 14 to 15 in Tijuana, Bruno Surace achieved a feat against the world number two of the World Boxing Council (WBC) in super-middleweight. Still little known to the general public, the boxer will benefit from quite a spotlight after this fight.

He didn’t know it was impossible, so he did it. Bruno Surace, 26 years old, 25 wins and 2 draws as a professional for no losses, defeated Jaime Munguia, 44 wins and 1 loss, on the night of December 14 to 15 in Tijuana, Mexico.

A feat for several reasons. The Mexican fought at home in front of his audience, and was preparing for his fight in the spring against Christian Mbilli for the No. 1 spot and therefore to challenge the champion of the category, Canelo Alvarez. The latter (62 wins, 2 losses) was the only one to have beaten Munguia, world number 2 in the super-middleweight category, so far.

Fighting for the first time outside French territory and in a heavier category than his own – he fought in middleweight (-72.574kg) when Minguia fought in super-middleweight (-76.2kg) – Surace acted as an outsider. Sending Minguia to the mat in the 6th round, without the Mexican getting up, the Marseillais signed a magnificent victory, and prevented Minguia from going to fight Mbili in the spring at the same time.

A professional since he was 18, Bruno Surace has cultivated a love of boxing from a very young age. He started boxing at age 3, with his father, before entering competition at the age of 8. He notably boxed at the Marcel Cerdan club in Marseille before joining “Kayser” Mourad Haddu, who still trains him to this day.

Since then, he has become double French champion in 2021 then European champion in 2023. All while pursuing studies at the same time. Holder of a master’s degree in business law obtained in 2021, he continued his career by completing a master’s degree in sports business at AMOS Marseille, which he obtained in 2023.

He also confided to RMC Sport before his fight that he “was forced to work” after finishing his studies: “I worked the day after my European title, a Sunday morning. I was doing sales, I had to find a side job, a job unrelated to my studies.”

A sales job, actually unrelated to his studies, for the man who dreamed of becoming a lawyer when he was younger, as he confided at the start of the year to the media Peuple Bleu & Blanc. Bruno Surace also confides his love for Olympique de Marseille, where he “watches all the matches” despite a busy schedule. And among his pre-fight rituals is “watching recipe videos.” Dishes that he generally eats after his fight, even more so after a victory like the one on Saturday night.
