According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, Israel carried out more than 60 strikes on Syrian territory in the space of a few hours on Saturday evening. The attacks mark a notable intensification of Israel’s military campaign, which intensified following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, toppled by rebel forces about a week ago.

Syrian military targets targeted

The Observatory said Israel fired 61 missiles in less than five hours, targeting strategic Syrian military sites. The strikes are part of a series of recurring attacks carried out by Israel in Syria in recent years, with the stated aim of countering the growing influence of Iran and its allies, notably Lebanese Hezbollah, in the region.

The targets include military bases, weapons depots and infrastructure deemed crucial by Israel for the logistical and military support of armed groups affiliated with Iran. Although Israeli authorities have not officially confirmed the strikes, they are following a well-known strategy aimed at containing any potential threats from Syria.

A fragile geopolitical context

These strikes come at a critical time for Syria, which is experiencing a period of great political and security instability after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The regime’s overthrow left a power vacuum in several parts of the country, increasing tensions between local armed factions, foreign forces and regional powers.

Israel, which closely monitors developments in Syria, sees this vacuum as a strategic opportunity but also a threat.
