In the early morning, for reasons still unknown, a car caught fire in the heart of the town of Pia. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. It is 6 a.m. this Sunday, December 15, 2024, when the Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters are engaged in one of the main arteries of the Salanquaise commune, avenue Maréchal Joffre, a few steps from the town hall. The damaged vehicle is located opposite the SPAR store and close to stored gas bottles. Given the situation, reinforcement is requested from the relief forces. In total, more than ten firefighters intervened.
Exposed to the heat released by the fire, out of forty gas cylinders counted, five of them exploded. To avoid further inconvenience, firefighters are working not only to cool them, but also to neutralize the flames from the vehicle which have spread to the business.

Five people relocated
The said establishment is damaged in terms of its facade, its entrance doors and its electrical installations. It is expected to be closed until further notice while repairs and refurbishment are carried out. It should be replenished with electricity and water as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the housing above the SPAR was also impacted by the water and electricity cuts necessary for the firefighters to act. Five people should be taken care of and relocated either by municipal services or by relatives.

The real estate agency next to the SPAR did not suffer any damage. However, like the houses, it is deprived of electricity. While Enedis is on site to ensure the return of the electricity network, the intervention of the firefighters ended around 9:30 a.m.
