Friday December 6at 2:50 a.m., the Vernon firefighters (Eure) were alerted to the presence of a vehicle fire in rue du Cendrier.
On site, they discovered a vehicle surrounded by three burning trash cans, leaving no room for doubt: it was indeed a arson and the perpetrator is clearly not a regular given the stratagem put in place. “When a person wants to set fire to a vehicle, they break a window and put an incendiary object inside,” notes a police source.
While the firefighters attempt to contain the vehicle fire, the police were contacted again, forty minutes later by a resident of rue de la Renaissance.
Panic in the building
Just a few meters from the first fire. The witness noticed that a fire broke out in the garbage room of the eight-story building located at 2 bis rue de la Poterie. The police are therefore the first to arrive on site. They noticed thick smoke rising upstairs and causing the panic in the apartments.
55 people evacuated
Some residents on the second floor are even ready to jump. THE law enforcement therefore decide to intervene alone to evacuate the inhabitants. A few minutes later, 22 firefighters arrived to take charge 55 people including five with a disability and twelve children.
“They were all rehoused overnight at the Arc-en-Ciel school but quickly returned to their apartments. »
Four intoxicated police officers
During their intervention, however, four police officers were intoxicated and had to be hospitalized.
“They had a significant amount of carbon monoxide in their body and had to be placed on oxygen. »
Reinforced police presence
The police officers left the hospital around 9:30 a.m. An investigation is still ongoing and video surveillance cameras have been used by the police. In the meantime, the police are strengthening their presence in the sector which is usually already well patrolled.
