Making up for the postponed match against Valencia on January 3 due to flooding, the Merengues will play their Copa del Rey match three days later, before hosting Mallorca in the Spanish Super Cup on January 9. A very tight start to the year which will put Carlo Ancelotti’s men to the test.
A Copa del Rey trap match in a busy schedule
A different challenge for Ancelotti’s men, since, despite a difficult period since November, they will have to assume their favorite status against a team which has just eliminated Alavès, residents of La Liga, and which will not be tamed easily, as expressed by its president on the day of the draw.
La Deportiva Minera, although vastly inferior on paper, knows that each match in the Copa del Rey is a golden opportunity to create a sensation and make history by facing a big name in Spanish football.
For its part, Real Madrid must avoid any decentralization and manage its very busy schedule as best as possible, while hoping to avoid new injuries which could be detrimental for the rest of the season.
