Algeria strongly condemned “the violation by the army of the Zionist entity of the sovereignty of Syria and the aggression against its territories,” said a press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made public this Wednesday.
“Algeria expresses its firm condemnation of the violation by the army of the Zionist entity of the sovereignty of Syria and the aggression against its territories, after the takeover of the buffer zone of the occupied Golan and the announcement of the cancellation of the disengagement agreement signed in 1974, taking advantage of the current circumstances in Syria and the instability in the region to impose a new fait accompli aligning with the expansionist and colonial policy of the occupation authorities Zionist,” said the same source.

Algeria, we read in the same press release, also denounced “the repeated attacks by the occupying army, which have recently increased, against Syrian infrastructure and institutions”. Algerian diplomacy called, in this sense, on the international community to adopt a decision in favor of preserving the territorial integrity of Syria.

“While reaffirming its unchanging position in favor of the unity and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as its legitimate right to recover the occupied Golan in accordance with the laws and international conventions in force, Algeria calls on the international community to adopt a unified position guaranteeing the security, stability and territorial integrity of Syria,” the statement concluded.

The situation in Syria has been marked, since last Sunday, by the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Assad fled Syria to Russia where he was granted asylum after groups hostile to his regime claimed responsibility for seizing the capital Damascus on Sunday, ending the rule of the Baath Party, in power since 1963. The Israeli army immediately intensified its air strikes in Syria and deployed beyond the buffer zone of the Golan Heights, under UN control. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that the part of the Syrian Golan occupied and annexed by Israel belonged to his country “for eternity”.
