REPORTAGE – The Israeli army indicates that it has destroyed most of the capabilities of the Syrian army. Benjamin Netanyahu says he is open to diplomatic relations with the new Syrian power.
The fall of Bashar al-Assad opened a new chapter in Israel's long war. Started around the Gaza Strip by the terrorist attack of October 7, 2023, it now extends, hundreds of kilometers further north, on Syrian soil, by massive bombings and the incursion of troops.
How far did they enter Syria? Officially, they only occupy the buffer zone located to the east of the Golan Heights and the Syrian slope of Mount Meron, in order to protect themselves from the risk of an attack by jihadist factions, a scenario taken very seriously in Israel since the 7 October. But according to Syrian security sources cited by the Reuters news agency, the Israeli tanks were about twenty kilometers from Damascus on Tuesday. The Syrian capital is about thirty kilometers from the Druze town of Majdal Shams, in the far north of the Israeli slope of the Golan Heights.
