The world famous Tupperware plastic container not only revolutionized food preservation, but it also became a collector’s item. Since the American company declared bankruptcy,
collectors are snapping up his little boxes. At the crossroads of nostalgia and the decor trend that gives pride of place to the 70s, Tupperware boxes sell at high prices.
On second-hand sales sites like Leboncoin
or eBayretro furniture or decorative pieces are selling like hot cakes. Wicker basketsthe plates, the curtainsthe formica tables that we found out of date just a decade ago, are now real collector’s items. And Tupperware boxes are now added to this long list.
Tupperware: a global success
The Tupperware adventure was born in 1938 with the brilliant invention of Earl Tupper, an American chemical engineer. Its airtight polyethylene bowl is a real revolution for food preservation and the arrival of refrigerators in American homes will do the rest. These little plastic boxes will establish themselves, first in Uncle Sam’s country, then everywhere on the planet thanks to a clever marketing technique.
Indeed, instead of selling in stores like any other brand, Earl Tupper opted for another strategy, home sales demonstration. Taking advantage of a major movement: the emancipation of women in the Western world, Tupperware increased its sales tenfold thanks to the famous “Tupperware meetings” allowing women to earn an income giving them greater independence.

Tupperware: a collector’s item
Tupperware has therefore been able to place its products in millions of kitchens around the world. But fashions are changing, younger generations, more concerned about the environment, prefer glass to plastic, and competition from Asia has undermined the company. Tupperware declared bankruptcy in mid-September, sad news for all the people on whom the brand will have left an imprint. A love that means that some of these famous boxes are already selling for astonishing prices.
At the heart of the retro trend of the 70s and grandmother’s style, Tupperware boxes and the period containers of our ancestors are now very popular on online sales platforms such as Vinted,
eBay et Etsy. Just enter the keywords
“Tupperware vintage” to see how nostalgic these little plastic boxes arouse.
