Around 10:35 a.m., police officers from the Quebec Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) were called by several citizens for a building fire on rue Jacques-Bédard.
Witnesses mentioned the presence of smoke and flames. An explosion was also heard in the area, according to Alexandre Lajoie, spokesperson for the SPCIQ.
When the first unit arrived on site, firefighters were able to confirm the presence of the fire in the building containing two businesses: King Béton and CuisinExpress.
At the time of the fire, four people were in the building. They were able to evacuate the scene, even before the firefighters and police arrived. The event caused no injuries.
Due to strong propagation, a 2nd and then a 3rd alarm were triggered. Around fifty firefighters were dispatched to the scene to control the flames.
Hydro-Québec also carried out remote load shedding. “The majority of power in the area has returned,” continues the spokesperson.
Long-term operation
Around 1 p.m., SPCIQ firefighters were still on site trying to control the fire. “The possible worsening code is still in progress, but the bulk of the flames have been reduced,” explains M Lajoie.
Considering the conditions and the risks of collapse, the firefighters chose to intervene with a defensive strategy.
“We are completing the extinguishing of the fire, but there are places in the building where we cannot go,” continues the spokesperson.
Around 2:40 p.m., the operation leader indicated that the situation was under control.
Not operational
According to the SPCIQ, the damage would be major to the entire building. Both businesses would be non-operational for some time.
“It is certain that businesses will not be able to operate for several days, or even weeks. Maybe even months,” estimates the spokesperson.
For the moment, everything indicates that the event was accidental. However, the origin of the fire is not yet known.
The fire marshal is on site to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
