Discreetly, Google has updated a support page. The company no longer distinguishes between functional new features and the deployment of patches. These models “will receive updates for five years from the date the device was first made available on the Google Store in the United States. They receive five years of security and OS updates, as well as only new features and improvements integrated via Pixel Drops.”
Google confirmed this change on Twitter. Please note that this concerns all models of each generation, and therefore the Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel Fold. The exact nature of these updates, however, has not been defined. Considering advances in artificial intelligence and local algorithm processing, it is difficult to think that the Pixel 6a will do as well as the next generation.
It would then not be surprising if Google reserves the latest flagship features for its new devices. Such a divide has already been observed at Apple. If currently 28 iPhone models can install iOS 18, only 6 are eligible for Apple Intelligence.
