What is sarcoidosis, the disease that eats away at Mohammed VI
Descriptive text here

The state of of King Mohammed VI has returned to center stage in Morocco and abroad. The monarch made a public appearance this week – only the second since returning to the country last March after a long stay in Gabon – and he appeared very thin and weak.

In addition to his heart problems, Mohammed VI suffers from sarcoidosis, a disease that affects the immune system. The king is seriously ill.

This week it was filmed during the presentation of a locally designed car. The images broadcast on the media and social networks are very expressive: Mohamed VI appeared even more emaciated and tired than he was during his last public appearance.

Speculation has since gone well, some suspecting the resurgence of his heart problems, others a complication of sarcoidosis which he has suffered for several months.

In just two years, the 59-year-old sovereign had to undergo heart surgery twice, in in 2018 and then in Rabat in 2020. If the press has since stopped talking about his cardiac arrhythmia, it regularly mentions the another disease from which the king of Morocco suffers, sarcoidosis.

The disease from which the king of Morocco suffers can be debilitating

It is a relatively rare disease. According to the specialized site Top Santé, it affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide.

Sarcoidosis is caused by the dysregulation of the immune system which, by reacting in a ” excessive “, makes accumulate” granulomas or inflammatory cells, in the organs, in particular in the lungs, explains Top Santé.

Medicine knows little about the factors that cause this dysregulation of the immune system. The hypothesis adopted is that of a overreaction » in the face of foreign elements, such as pollutants.

The symptoms of the disease are dry cough, skin lesions, shortness of breath on the slightest effort, fatigue, visual disturbances or even night sweats.

According to Top Santé, sarcoidosis can heal without treatment after a few years, which is the case in about 50% of patients.

But in the other half, it requires medical treatment based on corticosteroids and even immunosuppressants. For a significant proportion of those affected (10 to 20%), it can leave a permanent disability.

The drowsiness of Mohammed VI during his public appearances in recent years was explained by the lack of sleep due to his nocturnal outings, especially since he has been dating the Azaitar brothers, German-Moroccan martial arts champions who have become best friends. closer to the king.

Many observers now favor the hypothesis of a deterioration in his state of health, his continued weight loss not being the effect of lack of sleep alone.
