Since September, exceptional archaeological excavations have taken place in Bourg-Charente, next to Jarnac in Charente. 470 tombs, dating from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries, have been unearthed since September, before the construction of a housing estate near the village church. The excavation site currently covers 2700 square meters, and this is only part of the ancient village cemetery. The excavation campaign must end in Bourg-Charente in mid-December, to make way for the construction of the subdivision, which will begin in 2025
The tombs are arranged in the cemetery, on several superimposed levels. The skeletons are alone, or in pairs, sometimes three, with their heads turned towards the west, on their backs, without personal possessions or jewelry. The study of the bones should make it possible to know whether they were buried naked or whether they wore even a shroud.
