The Neuchâtel couple had only communicated through shouts for decades, in a climate of permanent tension. On June 19, 2023, around 5:30 p.m., the 80-year-old husband returned to the marital apartment after shopping, and the situation degenerated once again. His 78-year-old wife insults him, spits on him, tries to hit him with a crutch. He pushes her away, she falls onto a bed from where she kicks him in the stomach and genitals with her heels. To silence her, he covers her mouth and nose with his right hand. She can no longer breathe, loses consciousness, then dies. Tried this Wednesday by the Neuchâtel Criminal Court, the octogenarian was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment.

For the defense, who recognizes that it is femicide, the defendant did not intend to kill his wife. “My client was not a jealous, alcoholic, violent or controlling husband. On the contrary, he was submissive to the woman he loved, even if they had made each other go through hell for years,” argued lawyer David Erard. The accused still struggles today to recognize that he committed a murder and believes that he only defended himself: “Why do you want me to be at fault when I am attacked?”
