AutoScout24, the platform for digital classified ads for vehicles in Europe, highlights for the first time the search criteria of motorists and their expectations.

Because nearly 4 used vehicles are sold for every 1 new one in , these analyzes shed real light on what the French are looking for in a used vehicle.

Trust and security are priorities

More than 40% of individuals choose to buy a used vehicle from a professional, because it provides numerous guarantees including the condition and maintenance history of the vehicle, but also financing solutions and warranty extensions.

Last October, the total used vehicle market recorded nearly 500,000 transactions and registrations up +3.5% compared to October 2023.

For its part, the new vehicle market continues to contract. It shows a decrease of -2.5% for the current year with 135,529 registrations.

Decarbonization is not yet there

The market is moving towards a diversification of engines, with increased demand for electrified vehicles, while traditional engines (petrol and diesel) continue to dominate, but are showing signs of slowing sales.

« If online search criteria do not correspond 100% to purchasing actions, these are indicators to be taken into account by professionals. » explains Vincent Hancart – Managing Director of Autoscout24 France.

« Although electrified engines have progressed well, we nevertheless observe that volumes are increasing slowly. Technologies are evolving rapidly and consumers are hesitant to invest large amounts for vehicles with unpredictable residual values and which could be obsolete in a few years. A very large number of motorists, constrained by their budget, still invest in older diesel vehicles. »
