Apparently, things are still going badly at Ubisoft and the publisher has made a radical decision for one of its latest games. Very sad news, and not just for the game and the players elsewhere.
Clearly at Ubisoft it’s always very complicated. Regularly shaken by controversies, problems within the company or projects that do not succeed, the publisher has been sailing through a storm for a while. However, there have been some bright spots along the way. Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is a nice little surprise, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is excellent, The Crew Motorfest very effective… even the recent Star Wars Outlaws is not bad at all. However, the French video game giant is finding it difficult not to get tired of it and, clearly, a new shadow is about to appear on the table.
Ubisoft on the verge of sealing the fate of one of its big games?
Insider Gaming, through the very informed Tom Henderson, indeed affirms that something sad is brewing within Ubisoft. According to the insider’s sources, a meeting was held recently at Ubisoft and one of the publisher’s last big games was about to be pulled. XDefiant, an imposing FPS which made a big splash during its first public testing phases, would visibly be in its home stretch. It is reported that Ubisoft has already signed its death warrant and that the game will be pulled the plug by June 2025.
Even more serious, it is said that more than 170 layoffs would also be carried out by the month of February and studios in San Francisco and Osaka would be the first affected and should even close. On the player side, Ubisoft plans to keep the game on artificial respiration until June 2025 with a reduced team, and should warn players, as well as detail the terms concerning microtransactions, a little later.
The future of XDefiant would be uncertain
This is not the first time that the state of health of XDefiant and more broadly of Ubisoft has been mentioned. Insider Gaming, for example, had already reported earlier in the year that the FPS was in the hot seat. Ubisoft was then reassuring, but apparently things did not get better. XDefiant is nevertheless appreciated on paper, praised for its nervous gameplay in particular, even if certain things still annoy regular players.
But unfortunately, the number of players and the money spent in the store would not be enough to keep the game alive. The very good Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is certainly not insignificant to this massive flight of players. For the moment, however, Ubisoft has not communicated on the subject or commented on Insider Gaming’s statements. We will therefore remain cautious regarding the final decision and the fate of XDefiant, even if at first glance, it doesn’t look very good.
