Alberta’s sports minister says the former Edmonton Elks executive will lead a committee charged with improving athlete safety in combat sports.
Joseph Schow says Victor Cui’s extensive experience in establishing a combat sports commission and improving athlete safety will be a key asset.
Cui, who left the Canadian Football League team in 2023, is also a co-founder of ONE Championshipa martial arts media organization.
Schow’s announcement comes just over a week after amateur mixed martial arts fighter Trokon Dousuah, 33, died from injuries sustained during a charity fight held on the territory of a premier nation near Edmonton.
Schow says his department takes athlete safety seriously and works to ensure combat sports participants can fight safely.
The committee plans to meet with sports experts before Christmas to better understand the gaps and opportunities that exist in combat sports.
