Morocco is today establishing itself as a privileged destination for major international film productions, said the famous Italian actress Monica Bellucci.

The Kingdom has become a real showcase highlighting several emerging national and international talents, notably through the Marrakech International Film Festival which celebrates artistic diversity in its entirety, declared the Italian actress during a meeting with the press on the sidelines of his participation in this high mass of the 7th art.

“It is an honor for me to take part for the third time in this wonderful Festival which brings together the biggest names in cinema from the four corners of the world,” she rejoiced.

Regarding her documentary film “Maria Callas, Monica Bellucci: a meeting” by Greek director Yannis Dimolitsas, screened on Sunday as part of the “11th Continent” section of the Festival, she indicated that this film tells “the meeting of two souls and follows the work of an actress seeking to perfectly embody a character.

“Discovering the letters of the great singer Maria Callas, I was deeply moved by the power of her words, her vulnerability and the disarming sincerity that emanated from them. It made me want to share these fragments of life with the public,” she explained.

The film is a continuation of an artistic adventure that began on stage where Monica Bellucci magnificently played the role of Maria Callas, highlighting her journey, as well as her moments of glory and weakness. With this new documentary, she continues her commitment to transmitting the poignant legacy of this famous Greek soprano.

“What particularly fascinated me was the duality of Maria Callas, a diva of great stature, but also a woman who had the courage and the strength to become who she felt deep down. “herself,” she confided with emotion, adding that very few people knew this highly sensitive side of the artist.

“Maria Callas continues to fascinate, decades after her death. She embodies a woman who, through her strength of character, dared to go against the grain, following her heart and her emotions, which is why so many actresses feel the need to bring her back to life through their works. , she stressed.

Furthermore, Monica Bellucci indicated that this film also reveals behind the scenes of her preparation to play this role, offering a dive into the entire process of creating an artistic work, including the stages, the doubts and the efforts necessary to bring it to life to a project of such sincerity.

As for the elements that helped her better interpret her role, she revealed that Maria Callas' sumptuous vintage dress profoundly helped her embody Maria Callas. “When I put it on, I had the feeling that it was coming back to life through this garment steeped in history,” she said.

About the scene where she wore a Moroccan caftan, she indicated that this traditional Moroccan garment is “synonymous with femininity and great elegance”.

Asked about the motivations that guided her artistic choices, Monica Bellucci explained that for her it was a question of instinct. “When I read a script, I feel something, a connection that sometimes allows me to discover a part of myself,” she said.

“Each film is a unique experience. I have acted in both large-scale productions and smaller projects, but when I find myself in front of the camera, it doesn't change anything for me,” she added.

Yannis Dimolitsas' film is a valuable immersion into the life and legacy of Maria Callas, played by Monica Bellucci as an absolute opera diva. It transports viewers into Callas' world, from his humble beginnings in New York to his triumph on world stages.

The 11th Continent is a section of the Marrakech Festival which presents daring and innovative films that shake up cinematographic representations.

Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Marrakech International Film Festival consolidates its place as an unmissable cinematographic event and a true moment of exchange and inspiration which illustrates the richness and diversity of the 7th art in all its splendor.
