US says 'actively working' on ceasefire between Israel and Hamas: News

Will there soon be a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas? More than a year after the start of the war, Washington explains that it is “actively working” on it, without being certain of reaching an agreement.

On October 7, 2023, the Hamas attack on Israeli territory left 1,207 dead, the majority of whom were civilians, according to an AFP count. The Hamas Ministry of Health counts 44,429 deaths on Palestinian territory in attacks launched by Israel in retaliation, including 47 people in the last twenty-four hours. So far, discussions between the Jewish state and the Islamist movement in the hope of obtaining a cease-fire and the release of Israeli hostages have proved unsuccessful.

On Sunday, December 1, Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, declared that the United States was “actively working” on a ceasefire agreement between the two camps. “There will be further discussions and consultations, and we hope to be able to reach a ceasefire with an agreement on the hostages, but we are not there yet,” he said on NBC. “We are very involved with key players in the region, and there is activity even today,” he continued.

“Indications” of progress

Among these key players: the Emir of Kuwait, Mechal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who this Sunday, December 1, called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during a summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (CCG). Gideon Saar, Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the same day, during a press conference in Jerusalem, “indications” of progress towards an agreement between Israel and Hamas. “What I can say is that there are signs that we may see a greater degree of flexibility from Hamas due to circumstances, including the Lebanon deal [avec le Hezbollah, NDLR]but not only that,” he clarified, assuring that the Israeli government “has the desire to move forward on this subject.”
