LUnion Saint-Gilloise won its first victory in the Europa League on Thursday evening. After two draws and two defeats, the Brussels residents won 0-1 on the pitch of FC Twente in Enschede, in the Netherlands, during the 5th day of the Europa League. Mohammed Fuseini scored the only goal of the match.
These three points taken allow the Union to total 5 and move up to 24th place, the last play-off place.
From the start, the Union played high and Franjo Ivanovic thought he could open the scoring after a good effort from Sofiane Boufal, but the Croatian striker’s goal was refused by the video referee. The Brussels residents continued to maintain pressure on the opposing area and Ousseynou Niang threw Fuseini perfectly on the edge of offside. Alone against Lars Unnerstall, the Ghanaian slipped the ball between the legs of the German goalkeeper to open the scoring (11th). Stunned, Twente gradually came to his senses and scored a first shot with a header from Sem Steijn on Anthony Moris (31st).
Returning from the locker room, Joseph Oosting, the Twente coach, made three changes and the Dutch were more offensive but Steijn was not more realistic and shot over from close range (49th). The Union tried to drive the point home on the counter and Ivanovic missed the finish in turn, stumbling on Unnerstall (57th).
Saint-Gilles wasted another break point: Kevin Rodriguez shot at the goalkeeper after a tumble to the left and Anan Khalaili followed up, but shot over (84th). The Brussels residents then managed to hold the score until the final whistle.
During the 6th day, the USG will host the French from Nice on December 12 at the Roi Baudouin stadium.
