Pagra, the editorial magazine looks at a taboo in our society: the prostitution of minors in Guyana. It’s also an open secret. Who has never seen or does not know a teenager who has sexual relations with an older man, in exchange for gifts or exchanges of services? Prostitution is also a way for many young people to feed themselves.
The prostitution of minors in Guyana, as elsewhere, takes on more commonplace terms: “sponsor”, “escort” or “pigeon”. But behind these words, more and more young Guyanese men and women are prostitutes without even thinking about doing it. During this investigation, Jocelyne Helgoualch and Martial Gritte met young people from several municipalities in Guyana. All testify to the extent of the phenomenon of prostitution of minors in the territory and evoke the complicity or pressure of parents or families pushing adolescents into prostitution.
