Install a water-saving shower, a shower stop and water aerators
Opt for an economical hand shower (price: €30 to €50) which mixes air with water. At identical comfort, the flow rate (and therefore hot water consumption) is reduced by 75%.
Between the faucet and the hose, install a shower stop (price: 10 to 20€): by pressing the button, the flow stops for the duration of washing and resumes at the right temperature when you press it again. On the same principle, adopt aerators and water savers (price: €5 to €10) to screw onto the end of the taps;

Set your water heater to a certain temperature (and give it an insulating blanket)
A water heater set to 55°C is sufficient. Program it to only heat during off-peak hours if you have opted for this option. Cut it off as soon as you go on vacation.
If it is installed in an unheated room, the water cools more quickly: wrap it in a warm insulating jacket (around €50 in a DIY store), explains Florence Clément to Ademe, the the ecological transition.

What final saving on the bill?
What economy? “With these tips, it is possible to reduce energy costs for hot water by a third,” explains Florence Clément at Ademe, the Ecological Transition Agency.
Turn off devices
No more unnecessary spending! Even when they are on standby, TV, computer and other hi-fi devices consume power. Turn them off. If you group several of them together on a multiple socket, a single gesture is enough.
What savings can you expect on the electricity bill?
Until 10% of electricity consumption (excluding heating).
Fill the washing machine and dishwasher to the maximum and choose eco programs, which use less electricity (the cycle is longer because the water, heated less, must rotate more).
Beware of devices that consume too much power
Limit the use of appliances that consume too much energy, such as the dryer or old kitchen hotplates. “Defrost the refrigerator regularly, and set its temperature between 4°C and 6°C,” finally advises Florence Clément.
Consider the temperature programmer
A temperature programmer maintains the desired degrees in each room depending on the time of day or night. You can adjust it with a tap on your smartphone if you have to come home earlier or later. The result is up to 15% savings on your heating bill.
