Conakry: Fanta Sangaré, “the lady who prays on the water”, tried in a case involving 50 kg of gold

Lady Fanta Sangaré, whose previously unpublished photos shook the web in June 2023, she was praying on the water, is being tried for breach of trust at the Dixinn court relocated to Ratoma town hall. She is being prosecuted in a case of alleged misappropriation of 50 kilograms of gold, worth 35 billion Guinean francs to the detriment of Malick Keïta, civil party in this case. At the hearing yesterday, Tuesday November 26, 2024, she denied the facts put against her. She could also get away with it, especially since the prosecutor requested her release for an unconstituted offense, Guineematin.com noted on site through one of its reporters.

In June 2023, Lady Fanta Sangaré created a buzz, presented on a carpet, praying on the water. On June 22, she will be arrested not in connection with this story which had stirred up the internet, but in a case which pitted her against a certain Malick Kéita. The latter demanded a large quantity of gold from the lady. At the time this gold disappeared in Conakry, the lady was in Djankana, in the town of Kankan. An alibi that could weigh in the balance. However, it was his daughter Oumou and a certain Fofana, all on the run, who allegedly disappeared with the treasure, taken from land belonging to the Keita family in Kankan.

This Tuesday’s hearing was devoted to the requisitions and pleadings of the parties to the trial.

In the pleadings phase, the civil party’s lawyer will ask the court to declare the defendant Fanta Sangaré guilty. He will plead for the restitution of the missing 50 kilograms of gold or payment of the value of the 50 kilograms of gold, which is equivalent to 35 billion Guinean francs.

For his part, the representative of the public prosecutor will say that the facts cannot be attributable to the defendant, especially since while the quantity of gold disappeared in Conakry, the lady was in Kankan. “We, the public prosecutor, considered that there was no violation of criminal law because Fanta was in Djankana (Kankan), and the gold disappeared in Conakry here. The witnesses who came from Kankan, including members of the Keïta family, all recognized that those who sent the gold left Lady Fanta Sangaré in Djankana. Even if she manages to collaborate with others at a distance, since the gold never passed through her hands during this time on the road from Kankan to Conakry, we can estimate that it was not she who misappropriated this treasure. Today, Oumou (daughter of Fanta Sangaré) and Fofana, who were among those who kept the gold safe, are in the wild. So, we must involve all those who had control of the gold. So, I have nothing to pursue. Apply article 544, by dismissing her for prosecution for an unconstituted offense,” requested the prosecutor.

For his part, the defense lawyer will request the application of article 489 of the penal code, asking the judge to declare this case inadmissible. Because his client, Lady Fanta Sangaré, was in Djankana and the disappearance of the gold took place in Conakry. The one who had the key to the house where the gold was located has disappeared into thin air, he says.

In her own defense, Fanta Sangaré, detained since June 23, 2023, requested leniency from the court, reiterating her innocence in this case.

Ultimately, the court adjourned the case until December 10 to render its decision.
