Celebration for Cristian Tarragona’s third goal, highlighting a stunning performance from Talleres in Santa Fe.
Independiente moves away from the qualification zone for the Copa Libertadores after losing 2-1 as a visitor against Newell’s in a match valid for the 24th day of the Liga Profesional, played at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.
Immediately after the match, all players from the visiting team confronted referee Andrés Merlos over some questionable decisions, prompting the police to intervene to escort the official.
At the kick-off, Damián Pérez fouled Mateo Silvetti in the area. Merlos only awarded the penalty after reviewing the incident with VAR. Banega came forward to convert and opened the score to 1-0.
Despite the setback, Independiente sought to react, showing little creativity but still came close to equalizing with two missed chances by Diego Tarzia and Santiago Hidalgo, both saved by goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.

Independiente bow to Newell’s in controversy, struggling for Copa Libertadores qualification
In the second half, Newell’s came out much stronger and quickly increased their lead to 2-0 thanks to ‘Juanchón’ García. This goal caused controversy as it remained unclear whether the ball had completely crossed the line.
Canelo’s late goal in the third minute of stoppage time proved too little, too late.
On the other hand, Talleres secured a vital 3-2 victory against Unión de Santa Fe, who took the lead in the third minute with a penalty converted by Adrián Balboa.
However, Rubén Botta was the star player, carrying his team on his shoulders and leading the comeback. He equalized from the penalty spot (his celebration almost caused a stir due to his past at Colón) and went on to make a significant impact.
A header from Matías Galarza, who was another player on display, gave Talleres a 2-1 lead before half-time, and an excellent finish from Cristian Tarragona capped the comeback following a Galarza cross. Lucas Gamba’s late goal was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
