UK could get additional public holiday in 2025

Between the Queen’s platinum jubilee, the King’s coronation and the fact that England almost won the Euro twicel’expression “additional public holiday” has often been mentioned in recent years. Obviously eight public holidays aren’t enough for us Brits, so luckily the UK could have one more in 2025.

The May 8, 2025 will mark 80 years of Victory in Europe Daywhile Victory over Japan Day will take place on August 15. The Government is already discussing how we will celebrate this day as a nation, and dates close to both dates have been proposed for a possible additional public holiday in 2025. The official anniversary of the end of the Second World War does not will however not be celebrated before September 2, 2025.

When will the UK get an extra public holiday in 2025?

Regardless of when it occurs, the additional public holiday will coincide with a four-day weekend of celebrations. Two options are currently being considered by the government to mark the anniversary of the Second World War. The first option is to release on Friday May 9 and Monday May 12while the other consists of add August 22 to the August 25 summer holiday.

The month of May is already full of public holidays, with the early May bank holiday on Monday May 5 and the spring bank holiday on Monday May 26. So we doubt they’re about to add two more. It is very likely that the public holiday at the beginning of May be moved to Friday – which happened in 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Personally ? I would like to see an autumn holiday…

What celebrations can we expect?

Nothing has yet been announced, but the Ministry of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport revealed to Express that more than £10 million had been set aside for the eventscompared to £28 million for Platty Jubes. Given that numerous parades and street parties in British cities were canceled by COVID for the 75th anniversary of VE Day, expect a lot more this time!

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “The 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day will be moments of great significance for our country, and the Government is committed to commemorating these occasions appropriately. That’s why we’ve announced more than £10 million for events. We will soon announce the government’s plans to mark the occasion.
