The 1 p.m.
The banana, popular and still affordable, has just broken a new consumption record in France this year, at 750,000 tonnes. But why such enthusiasm? “It’s easier to eat, it’s easier to open”launches this passerby in the subject of 1 p.m. Between 2020 and 2024, the purchase of bananas increased by 6% in France, where in 2023-24 it became the first fruit consumed, ahead of the apple, according to Kantar.
“The choice of distributors to set the price most of the time at less than 1.99 euros per kilo has a role”in a general context of inflation, explains Philippe Pons, president of the Interprofessional Banana Association (AIB). France, with 11.5 kg consumed per inhabitant, still has room for improvement compared to the rest of Europe, at 12.7 kg.
Orange in third position
Obviously, the French favor fruits that are easiest to eat. Price obviously plays a role in the success of bananas. But for the supermarket manager contacted in the TF1 subject above, it does not explain everything. The French especially want ready-to-eat foods: “Fruit meets a need for immediate consumption, a need for pleasure”he explains. “So indeed there are products that take time to peel, which are a little more complex. And products like apples and bananas which are eaten directly, immediately.”
