Manif d’art announces the winners of the Videre Prizes

Manif d’ awarded, on Monday, November 25, the Videre Prizes in visual arts during the Gala of Prizes of Excellence in Arts and Culture at the Manivelle center of the Saint-Charles-de-Limoilou church, an event produced and directed by Culture Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches. These awards highlight the talent of creators from the Quebec region at different stages of their careers.

VIDERE PRIZE – UPCOMING VISUAL ARTS
The winner is Danielle Cormier for the exhibition Ce qu’il rest, presented at the Visual Arts Gallery from November 9 to December 17, 2023, in which the artist presents a universe marked by the tension between the finesse and gravity of the forms presented. Research into space and matter is skillfully carried out there. With this prize, the jury wishes to recognize his current work and encourage his future artistic explorations, which look promising.

This prize is awarded to an emerging artist with less than seven (7) years of practice, whose recent exhibition stood out from the entire artistic program for the 2023-2024 season in the region of Quebec. The prize was awarded by the Faculty of Planning, Architecture, Art and Design of University.

VIDERE PRIZE – CREATION IN VISUAL ARTS
The winner is Bill Vincent for the exhibition Exsiccatae, presented at the Louise-Carrier Exhibition Center from March 3 to April 3, 2024, in which the jury recognizes the renewal of a finely mastered painting practice. Bill Vincent allows us to see these works inspired by botany in a privileged way, by delicately exposing the details, the layers that compose them. A contradiction arises from these, however, when they seem to disappear before our eyes. The digital-looking documentation imposes a ghostly character on these works. This exhibition presented the fruit of accomplished and current work.

This prize is awarded to an artist with seven (7) years of practice or more, whose recent production has stood out from the entire artistic program for the 2023-2024 season, in the Quebec region.

VIDERE PRIZE – RECOGNITION IN VISUAL ARTS
The Videre Reconnaissance Prize in visual arts was awarded to Richard Baillargeon. The jury recognizes the artist’s commitment to developing his practice around text and image, which he has been pursuing for more than 40 years. He also highlights the important contribution of his photographic works exploring movement and narrative. The impacts of his presence in various Canadian cultural circles, as a teacher or administrator, also make him a major cultural player.

Orchestrated by Manif d’art, the Videre Visual Arts Prizes are awarded annually as part of the Gala des Prix d’excellence en arts et culture, an event produced and directed by Culture Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches. Awarded after a call for applications and by a jury of peers who visited exhibitions held in the Quebec region during the season, the Videre Visual Arts Prizes have recognized the creative talent of regional artists since 1993. The word “videre” comes from from classical Latin and evolved into the verb “to see”.

These prizes, accompanied by a $1,000 scholarship for each winner, were made possible thanks to the support of the Faculty of Planning, Architecture, Art and Design at Laval University (Prix Videre Emerging Visual Arts) and the Manif d’art Foundation.
