Was June 2024 really that cold and rainy?

The month of June has gone and brought with it stormy episodes and late heat. In a press release issued this Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Meteo France draws up the climate report for June 2024.

Overall, the sixth month of the year shows temperatures in line with seasonal norms. Météo France had made the same observation for May 2024.

The storm, central element of the month of June

Although rainfall was once again above normal across the country (+20% compared to the 1991-2020 norms), it remained disparate across regions. In the Pays de la Loire, Poitou, Burgundy, as well as in the central Alps and Haute-Corse, rainfall exceeded double the norm, estimates Météo France.

The torrential storms that hit the Alps, a hamlet in Isère and the Vésubie Valley in the Alpes-Maritimes caused significant flooding with torrential floods.

Storms have generally affected the whole of France throughout the month. In mid-June, they were violent and very rainy in Gironde and Mayenne. Stormy weather also affected the departments of Tarn and Meuse.

Generous sunshine in the Channel and Brittany

Unlike rainfall, sunshine was deficient across the country, with a 15% drop in June’s normal. However, Normans and Bretons can be happy about one thing: Brittany and the Channel coast are the only regions to have benefited from more mild sunshine than normal (+10%).

The deficit represents 20% in the east of the country, notes Meteo France.

The heat was long overdue

France has experienced a somewhat late rise in temperatures across the country. The first 30°C were reached in Paris but also in Bordeaux where the thermometer showed 32°C on June 25. A date rather advanced compared to the climatology for the Gironde.

Meteo France notes, however, that the symbolic 40°C mark was not crossed in France in June, unlike in the two previous years.
