Tick tock… Candidates have only a few hours left to decide…

The left withdraws in this constituency of Morbihan

It is a department that is rather anchored on the right. It was therefore not very surprising to see the very young Jade Béniguel, a student at Sciences Po, come third in the election in the second constituency of Morbihan. The left-wing candidate withdrew.

Jimmy Pahun, candidate of the presidential majority, came out on top in this first round, collecting 32.1% of the votes, ahead of the RN candidate Florent de Kersauson (30%), brother of the sailor.

How many cancellations before 6pm tonight?

There were 155 withdrawals on Monday evening. Who can beat that? While many three-way races are looming, 155 candidates have already announced their withdrawal in order to counter the National Rally. Others could follow this Tuesday, but how many? It’s hard to say, as some outgoing MPs, particularly from the presidential majority, are clinging to the hope of keeping their seats.

Candidates have until 6 p.m. to submit their application to the prefecture. We will know more this evening, then.

Raquel Garrido surrenders in the 93

The outgoing MP for the 5th constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis will not be re-elected. Qualified for the second round, the rejected LFI member Raquel Garrido has withdrawn. Fair play, when you consider that she is stepping aside to make way for the candidate nominated by La France Insoumise in her place, she who had taken over the constituency in 2022. “I am withdrawing. I will do it, unilaterally, all by myself. Because I do not have principles that vary,” Raquel Garrido declared on BFMTV late Monday evening.

The elected official said on Monday that she was “ready” to withdraw on condition that the candidates nominated by LFI against the outgoing rebellious deputies Alexis Corbière and Danielle Simonnet, “purged” like her, also withdraw.

In the first round, Raquel Garrido came third in her constituency with 23.6% of the vote. In the lead, the candidate invested by LFI Aly Diouara received 33.1%, ahead of the mayor of Drancy Aude Lagarde (24.6%).

Will Jordan Bardella really refuse Matignon if the RN does not have an absolute majority?

With 33.15% of the vote, the National Rally and its allies came out on top in the first round, but without the certainty of obtaining an absolute majority on July 7. If this were not the case, the leader of the RN has already indicated that he would refuse Matignon. How can this be explained and should we take his word for it? Read our article on the subject.

The closing date for applications is tonight at 6 p.m.

It is this Tuesday evening that the list of candidates will be officially known for the second round. “The declarations of candidacy will be filed from the proclamation of the results by the general vote counting commission and until Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 6 p.m.,” specifies the presidential decree of June 9. “The publication of the list of candidates whose candidacy has been definitively registered and their replacements is decided and published by the prefect (…) for the second round, the day after the deadline set for the submission of candidacies.”

Jordan Bardella castigates “an alliance of dishonor”

Guest on TF1’s news on Monday, Jordan Bardella castigated “an unnatural alliance between Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Emmanuel Macron” by mentioning the multiple mutual withdrawals of the candidates of the New Popular Front and Ensemble, when they qualified in third position for the second round, limiting the potential three-way races. “The president comes to the aid of a violent far-left movement, and France Insoumise calls for a vote for Madame Borne. I believe that the French are not fooled by this alliance of dishonor!”, says the president of the RN, who also published a montage on X between the two men.

The reliability of polling institutes

Sometimes criticized in the past, the polling institutes presented reliable forecasts for the legislative elections, as they had done for the European elections. The RN and its allies, credited with 35 to 37% of voting intentions in the last days of the campaign, finally obtained a little more than 33% of the votes. For the left (28%) as for the presidential camp (20%), the last barometers had been in line with reality, almost to the nearest percentage point.

“The proximity of the European elections has helped us greatly,” explains Vincent Thibault, opinion consulting director at Elabe. “In three weeks, respondents have a precise memory of their previous vote and do not change their minds radically.” Especially since the far-right vote seems less taboo every year. “The de-demonization of the RN and its progression gradually strengthen our ease in understanding this vote,” explains Bruno Jeanbart, vice-president of OpinionWay.

The challenge is much more difficult to meet for Sunday’s vote, due to the many uncertainties between the two rounds. “Our deadlines are very short, we cannot conduct our surveys before Wednesday and we must stop publishing on Friday. Our enemy is time,” admits Bruno Jeanbart.

Jules Koundé calls for a blockade against the RN

French national football team defender Jules Koundé called on Monday to “block the far right and the National Rally” during the second round of legislative elections on July 7. “This is not a party that will lead our country towards more freedom and living together,” declared the FC Barcelona player, following the qualification of the Blues for the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

Who do young people vote for?

Strongly mobilized during the first round of the legislative elections, 18-24 year-olds mostly gave their votes to the left, even if the vote in favor of the RN increased, according to specialists. “57% of them made the trip,” underlines Laurent Lardeux, sociologist, researcher at the National Institute of Youth and Popular Education. That is a mobilization up 27 points compared to 2022. According to a survey by Harris Interactive for Challenges, M6 and RTL, 41% of them slipped a ballot for the New Popular Front, 23% for the National Rally, while 13% chose the presidential camp and 8% for the Republicans (LR). Another survey, conducted the day before the election by Ipsos Talan for France Télévisions, Radio France and Public Sénat, found that 48% of 18-24 year-olds voted for the NFP, 33% for the RN and its allies, far ahead of the Macronists (9%) and LR (4%).

Viktor Orban “optimistic” after RN score

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose country has taken over the rotating EU presidency, expressed his “optimism” on Monday after the RN’s score in the first round of the legislative elections. “Things cannot continue like this in Brussels, they have to change. That’s why the Belgian Prime Minister fell, that’s why the French government fell.” “The first source of our optimism is that people want change. But the bureaucrats in Brussels think differently, they don’t want change,” he said in an interview with Hungarian public television.

Xavier Bertrand wants a government of “republican revival”

The LR president of Hauts-de-France demanded on Monday a “republican surge government” as an alternative to an executive in the hands of the RN or to “a backroom coalition”. With this idea, Xavier Bertrand wants to get France “out of the impasse into which Mr. Macron has plunged it”, he explained on TF1. This will be “a provisional government of the Republic as existed at a time when it was necessary to rebuild”.

The leader of the right-wing party Les Républicains, who called for a vote in the second round of the legislative elections for “the hundred” candidates from his party and independents, considered that the task of this government would be “clearly to rebuild our country”.
