The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump has some immunity from criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election results, making a trial unlikely before the next presidential election.

WASHINGTON, July 1 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a decision Monday that former President Donald Trump enjoys some immunity from criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election results, making a trial unlikely before the next presidential election.

The court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority including three justices appointed by Donald Trump himself, voted 6-3 along ideological lines, ordering the lower courts to review the case and determine which allegations cannot be prosecuted.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts rejected the former president’s arguments for broad immunity, saying that Donald Trump only enjoys immunity for his actions in his “official” capacity as president.

The Supreme Court, however, did not define what constitutes an official act in this case, delegating that decision to lower courts.

The Supreme Court’s prolonged delay in hearing the high-profile case helped Donald Trump by reducing the likelihood that a trial arising from the charges would conclude before the next election.
