Legislative elections in Haute-Garonne: “extremism, whether left or right, is always fundamentally dangerous” for the mayor of Toulouse who does not give voting instructions

the essential
The mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc, refuses to give voting instructions for the second round of the legislative elections.

He will not give voting instructions, refusing to position himself for the New Popular Front or for the National Rally. Apart from providing support to the members of his municipal team, the mayor of Toulouse did not take an active part in the legislative campaign in Haute-Garonne.

But the day after the first round, Jean-Luc Moudenc decided to speak out. “The results of the legislative elections, as I thought the day after the European elections, have confirmed the choices of rupture of a majority of our fellow citizens,” he states in a press release.

“Next Sunday, in some cases, the second round will be very frustrating for many voters, when there will only be two ballots, that of the National Rally and that of France Insoumise. I can only share their dismay. In this context, some are urging me to give a “voting instruction”, considering a single and unique danger, as if there were only one danger and on one side! We should therefore turn a blind eye to the dangers that extremism would engender, or even join forces with it, to combat the other extremism”, affirms the president of the Métropole, refusing to make a choice, not believing “that there are good extremists and bad extremists. My conviction is that extremism, whether it is from the left or the right, is always fundamentally dangerous”.

Municipal elections in sight

The man who has not belonged to a political party since 2022 thus refuses to call for a vote for the representatives of the New Popular Front, who locally make up his municipal opposition. “I will therefore not have the moral weakness to abandon myself to such complacency, even less to serve those who fiercely fight the municipal action led by my team!”, he justifies.

A position which certainly sees further than the legislative deadline, the mayor of Toulouse repeatedly reminding us that he is at the service of “all Toulouse residents, whatever their political preferences” . Because during the next municipal elections, Jean-Luc Moudenc does not forget that one of the winners of these legislative elections under the New Popular Front banner could take the head of a list in 2026. And in view of the vote of Toulouse residents, who placed the New Popular Front largely in the lead in all the “Toulouse” constituencies, the campaign is already launched.
