No more contact
This small gray box attached to telephone poles is used to distribute optical fibers to homes from the street. Claude, an octogenarian resident who lives nearby, rue des Bouvreuils, quickly discovers the extent of the damage. No more Internet, no more television and no more landline telephones…
“For me, it doesn’t matter,” confides Claude, “but next door, a lady needs to be connected to be able to use her “Présence verte” box” [un service de téléassistance pour séniors, NDLR]. Claude informs his operator, Free, of the breakdown. “They told me it was an Orange pylon. I saw a repairman pass by, a service provider from Orange, but he told me that he could not intervene, that a municipal decree was required to intervene in the parking lot. » And Claude and his neighbors have been deprived of fiber access for 10 days!
Breakdown: the right reflex
In the event of a “physical” failure of the fiber network, it is not the access providers who intervene, but Orange, which is responsible for the infrastructure.
What can be done to speed up repairs in such cases? At Orange, we proceed in three ways, according to a manager contacted by telephone. “Either subscribers call their access provider, who relays the information to us, or, if they are Orange customers, they dial 3 900 to initiate troubleshooting. The 3rd way is the worst, and is best avoided. It involves calling the town hall, although this is not their responsibility. »
In Claude's case, the delay is linked to an intervention problem. “We sent a repairer on November 19,” assures the Orange manager. But when he arrived, a car was parked at the access hatch to the telecoms room, where the fiber links are located. He couldn't intervene. »
A new passage was scheduled for this Friday, November 22. We bet that Claude and his neighbors should be connected quickly.
