At 31, Ariana Grande has nothing left to prove. With more than fifteen years of career behind her, the American has become a true music star, filling stadiums across the planet. Her ponytail and sweet pop have become her signature. A true jack-of-all-trades, the artist doesn't just sing. Like other singers, she also tried her hand at acting.
After trying her hand at dubbing (Snowflake, the white gorilla by Andrés G. Schaer, Underdogs by Juan José Campanella…), she also distinguished herself making several cameoslike its appearance in Zoolander 2 by Ben Stiller. Then, in 2021, the star found her first real film role by joining the 5-star cast of the comedy Don't Look Up: Cosmic Denial by Adam McKay, released on Netflix. A film in which Ariana Grande notably shared the poster with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet.
The fear of chaotic projections
On December 4, her French fans will discover her in a particularly anticipated film, Wicked by John Chu. A feature film, adapted from the musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzmanand in which she plays alongside Cynthia Erivo but also Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey.
In the United States, the film comes out this Friday, November 22. Anticipating a success that seems obvious, certain American cinemas nevertheless wanted to take the lead in order to avoid excesses. The main fear? Let the viewers sing at the top of their lungs during the screenings.
Rigorous measures
Thus, in a short thematic video broadcast before the sessions of WickedAMC, one of the leading cinema chains in the United States, wanted to share a very explicit message : “In AMC theaters, silence is golden. No discussions. No text messages. No songs. No moaning. No flirting. And absolutely no insults. Enjoy the magic of cinema.” Ryan Noonan, the firm's spokesperson, told Indy Star that the measure was intended to prevent “any disruptive behavior.”
In the press release, we can read: “The WICKED pre-show spot incorporates the themes of the film as a fun reminder and urges moviegoers not to disrupt the experience of those around them while they enjoy the show”. In the past, AMC had already taken similar measures regarding broadcasts of Taylor Swift concert films (The Eras Tour) and Beyoncé (Renaissance : A Film by Beyoncé). Ariana Grande fans are therefore warned. They will be able to admire their favorite star. But in silence.
