Weird, weird… This Wednesday evening in Reims, two fires broke out in quick succession on avenue de Laon and in a neighboring street. The firefighters were first called at 6:30 p.m. for heavy smoke at No. 181 avenue, in a small one-story building with attic space.
Only two people were present there, in the same apartment, on the first floor. They got out of the window on their own, before help arrived. None were injured.
The power goes out, the barber closes
Reconnaissance made it possible to locate the fire in the maintenance room, on the ground floor. Impossible to know what burned, everything is charred.
The power went out, forcing the nearby barbershop to close earlier than expected.
The presence of emergency vehicles (sixteen firefighters were mobilized) resulted in stopping tram traffic in both directions, from the station to Neufchâtel. There car traffic was also cut towards the city center, on the section of avenue de Laon going from boulevard Charles-Arnould to rue Jules-Guichard (the security perimeter was lifted around 8 p.m.).
Around 6:40 p.m., when the firefighters had just arrived in front of 181 avenue de Laon, other calls came from rue Croutelle, 100 meters away: smoke was escaping from the underground car park , at number 7 of the street. Rescuers discovered a trash can burning from below, near the wheels. They quickly drowned the fire.
A misguided mind could make the link between these two cases, imagining the same arsonist from avenue de Laon reaching the garage on rue Croutelle and bending down to set fire to the container with a lighter. However, these are only speculations that the police investigation will have to confirm or not.
