A fire broke out on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, in an apartment located on the 3rd floor of a building, at the corner of boulevard du Général-de-Gaulle and rue André-Aliker, in Fort-de-France (Martinique), reports Caribbean radio RCI . Around twenty firefighters and three firefighting trucks were mobilized to control the flames.
Passersby evacuate the premises
While waiting for help to arrive, several people intervened to evacuate the premises and begin to fight the flames using fire extinguishers. Among them was Aude Goussard, secretary of the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources.
“I saw a little black smoke coming from the roof […] I called the fire brigade and, seeing that they did not arrive, I ran down the steps of the courthouse. I grabbed three people in the street to evacuate the building”she testified on local radio.
Only two people were slightly injured. They were taken care of by the Samu doctor.
