With this update, PlayStation Portal becomes (almost) essential

It was a year ago, Sony released its much-maligned PS Portal. A remote playback device, inseparable from a PS5 console, which allows games installed on the home console to be played remotely, directly on its 1080p LCD screen. If the excellent ergonomics of the PS Portal are indisputable, its very limited functionalities tend to make players grimace. No cloud gaming, no applications available… But a recent update deployed by Sony will awaken interest in PS Portal, and many holdouts will consider purchasing it.

An update as unexpected as it is essential for the PS Portal

Indeed, since its launch, the PS Portal has clearly been the ideal companion for all those who cannot always access the living room to enjoy their PS5. We are thinking in particular of parents who, for various reasons (no screen at home, children watching their favorite cartoon, game that is too violent, etc.), can continue their game of Astro Bot, God of War or Elden Ring with complete peace of mind on their PS Portal.

As mentioned above, the PS Portal does not allow any use other than streaming games installed on the paired PS5. However, with a recent update (currently being deployed), Sony is changing the situation. In fact, the latter allows “to evolve” the PS Portal, by giving it a much-requested new feature: support for streaming in the cloud.

Concretely, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers (and only them) will be able to test the new beta version of cloud streaming on the PS Portal. In other words, they will be able to play in streaming, directly from Sony's servers, a little over a hundred PS5 games, even if they do not have a PS5 console.

Thus, from this day (and provided you are a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber), the PS Portal becomes independent, and therefore allows you to play PS5 games, without having to be paired to a PS5.

Sony indicates that it is “the beginnings of cloud streaming on PS Portal“. Also, at present, streaming games playable on PS Portal will be exclusively PS5 games. PS4/PS3 games are not supported. This is undoubtedly enough to revive the interest in PS Portal among players who considered the device too limited in functionality.

An audio problem also corrected by the update

And that's not all! Indeed, the recent update also corrects some shortcomings of the device, and in particular a problem related to the adjustment of the minimum audio output. Indeed, if you are the happy owner of a PS Portal, you have undoubtedly noticed that the minimum audio volume is too high, a fault which manifests itself in particular during nighttime sessions, when the household is asleep.

With the new firmware version, the volume is now lower when the audio level is set to minimum. The settings have also received an update, allowing optimization of the overall volume and sidetone volume.

This is enough to revive the interest in this PS Portal just before the end-of-year holidays, while allowing Sony to test the waters of cloud gaming and digital technology a little more, what's more after a PS5 Pro (it also much criticized) who made the choice of “all demat” at its launch.
