Top 10 most stolen vehicles in Quebec: the Toyota RAV4 takes the lead

The Honda CR-V is no longer the most stolen vehicle in Quebec or in Canada. This title now goes to the Toyota RAV4 and Highlander, respectively, according to the most recent rankings unveiled by the Équité Association firm.

The ranking reflects all flights listed during the year 2023.

Between 2021 and last year, vehicle thefts increased by 57.9% in Quebec, 48.2% in Ontario, 34% in the Maritime provinces and 5.5% in Alberta. Public Safety Canada announced its National Action Plan to combat vehicle theft last May, but despite investments and concrete measures adopted by the provincial and federal governments, and even if law enforcement indicates a decrease national level of auto theft in 2024, continued commitment and collaboration of all stakeholders is necessary to maintain the trend, maintains the organization.

“In order to sustainably address the auto theft crisis in Canada, solutions must evolve to focus not only on the recovery of stolen vehicles, but more importantly to prevent the theft from taking place, starting with updating the outdated Canadian regulation, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations,” adds the President and CEO of Équité Association, Terri O’Brien.

A modernized standard, consistent with ULC Standard 338, should be adopted for all manufacturers to reflect current flight methods. Protection against unauthorized access to vehicle electronic systems should also be strengthened, according to Équité Association.

Top 10 most stolen vehicles in Quebec in 2023

As mentioned in the introduction, after two consecutive years at the top of the ranking, the CR-V is no longer the most stolen vehicle in Quebec… but it nevertheless finds itself in second position, followed by another Honda. The rest of the list keeps roughly the same names as the previous year, except that the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ford F-150 no longer appear there. And once again, we see the absence of European brands.

Almost all vehicles on the list are from 2019 or newer and have vulnerabilities associated with keyless ignition systems. In particular, they are not equipped with anti-theft devices that comply with ULC 338 standards for theft prevention.
