And if you have an old car to get rid of, then the Volkswagen ID.4 even drops to 34,500 euros. Interesting ?
Manufacturers are taking up the gauntlet of face to face with Tesla. We are not saying that victory will be easy, or even possible, but tariff adjustment is inevitable. It also makes it possible to divert part of the customer base, because not everyone lives within the radius of action of a Tesla dealership in France. The local network remains a strong argument for historic manufacturers. And not all customers will be able to migrate to electric without significant support.
So, the fate of Volkswagen, Renault and others is ultimately not so desperate. We can clearly see that Chinese firms are not able to deploy in Europe so easily, and this will take many more years. BYD does not want to go low-cost and therefore leaves the field open to Tesla… for the moment.
The ID.4 still lagging behind?
Let’s take a look at Volkswagen’s offer for its ID.4 electric SUV from 36,000 euros thanks to the ecological bonus of 4,000 euros and a discount of 2,500 euros. With the conversion bonus, the price falls by an additional 1,500 euros.
For a sum 990 euros lower than the Tesla Model Y Propulsion (currently at 36,990 euros, bonus and discount of 4000 euros deducted), the Volkswagen ID.4 in the entry-level Pure Life Max finish. The eye immediately falls on the 52 kWh battery. The power is 125 kW (170 horsepower), which makes it a good family vehicle when you factor in the weight. For big thrills, the Model Y and its 300 horsepower will actually be more meaningful.
The autonomy is not great with 360 km promised in the WLTP mixed cycle, or 300 km in reality. The maximum charging power certainly reaches 145 kW, so recharges will not take too long, but we discover here a product that is especially interesting for moving the family during the week, less so for longer journeys. That’s about 50 miles less than the entry-level Tesla Model Y RWD.
Ultimately, if Volkswagen’s approach is commendable, its ID.4 Pure Life Max remains significantly behind the Tesla Model Y reference. The 1000 euros are not enough to make the purchase relevant: power, autonomy, equipment, driving pleasure, charging network, the arguments are too numerous.
