Cleaning in Plouisy: more asbestos than expected at the Kernilien roundabout

According to departmental services, 450 tonnes of waste were dumped on the roundabout. Among them, there is straw, tires, scrap metal but also dangerous products such as hydrocarbons or fiber cement sheets containing asbestos. It is because of the presence of the latter that the site is particularly delicate. It requires the intervention of a company specializing in asbestos removal: SNT. In order to avoid any spread of dust, a misting cannon continuously waters the roundabout. After collection, the construction equipment will in turn be cleaned. For their part, the dangerous debris will be transported to a specialized processing center, located in Laval. Non-hazardous waste will be sent to the Guillot environment recycling company in Ploumagoar.

  • 3 What impact on traffic?

During cleaning, traffic around the roundabout is carried out in a “half-moon”, which means that one half of the roundabout is closed. For vehicles coming from Lannion, a diversion has been put in place. In parallel with the construction site, a lane narrowing was installed over approximately 400 meters in the Lannion-Guingamp direction, on the D786. On the immediate approach to the roundabout, traffic is restored to two lanes. Originally, a reopening of traffic was planned for June 28 to 30, just for the weekend. However, the presence of asbestos waste on the site turns out to be more significant than expected and risks disrupting this schedule.

  • 4 How much does it cost?

Without knowing the precise extent of the increase, services

Departmental officials already assure that this excess of asbestos will have consequences on the cost of the work, initially estimated at €300,000. The cost of the project will be entirely the responsibility of the Department which, however, hopes for a subsidy from the State.

  • 5 Will there be any development of the roundabout?

In May, the mayor of Plouisy, Rémy Guillou, had suggested the idea of creating a mound of earth on the Kernilien roundabout. It would then be decorated with trees. “This way, tractors will no longer be able to dump their waste,” the mayor declared during a municipal council meeting. When questioned on this subject, the departmental services assured that “no project to develop the roundabout is planned in the immediate future.”
