Ghita Bennani, the wife of Mehdi Ben Barka, the leader of the National Union of Popular Forces who was kidnapped and murdered in Paris in 1965, and daughter of scholar judge Ahmed Bennani, joined her creator today in Paris.

The late Ghitha Bennani married political leader Mehdi Ben Barka in 1949 and faced numerous crises, including the assassination of her husband after his kidnapping in Paris. She took on the responsibility of raising her four children: her daughter Fawz and her sons Bachir, Saad and Mansour.

Before his assassination in 1965, Ben Barka took his wife and four children to Cairo, where they lived during the rule of Gamal Abdel Nasser. They stayed there after Mehdi’s assassination, before moving to Paris, where they lived for years. They rented a house from the municipality of Paris, thanks to the intervention of Jacques Chirac when he was mayor of Paris.

The deceased is the sister of Othman Bennani, professor of history at the University of Rabat, and of Ali Bennani, who accompanied the family, studied in Cairo and lived with them in France.

Since leaving Morocco in the 1960s, she only returned after the accession to the throne of King Mohammed VI in 1999.
